I would like to share with you now one of my favorite meditations. Meditations can help shift attention away from stressful thinking back to the present moment such as by focusing on objects like the breath, a candle, or the sky.
During this meditation, we are going to focus on the body. Since this will be a short meditation, we are going to focus on only one part of the body: the hands. To begin with, comfortably sit, stand, or lie down and relax the body. And just enjoy however you are right now. Your eyes can be open or closed.
Let’s begin to shift attention to the hands and feel the aliveness of the hands and fingers. Notice as you pay close attention, you can feel tingling in the fingers. You can feel a sense of energy in your hands, and of course, that energy or awareness is always there. As you place your attention in the hands and fingers, notice how peaceful it can feel to enjoy this relaxed aliveness.
When you feel present like this, even in your hands, you become present everywhere — in your body, mind, and emotions. You become mentally present, too. It can feel comforting to practice presence from time to time throughout the day by sensing the awareness and aliveness in your body through your hands and fingers.
